My search criteria was very specific when accessing the University of Kentucky online finding aid. I was seeking records holding images that were crowded in details, and potentially drawn using patterns or different mark making technique. Upon viewing Allen Brewer Jr’s art studio photograph, the highly active space housing an artist seemingly lost in a concentration meditation (if such a thing exists?), this immediately was the image I wanted to draw.
Created using oil pastels, the composition was built upon a quick loose line drawing based upon the digitized image. Each pattern or growth of colors has been bordered by harsh dark lines. This enabled the image to have some grounding where originally the tone looked flat. The original photograph is a fixed split second moment in time, but drawn by hand it is perhaps more authentic to the half chanced glance by the human eye.
